When it comes to skin care routines and skin health in general, moisturizing is a crucial step that should be taken seriously. Moisturizing the skin plays an important role in the condition of your skin no matter what skin type you have. The main role of a moisturizer is to hold water in the outermost layer of skin while protecting and lubricating the skin. The reason this is so important is because the skin acts as a barrier to many threats and we need to nourish it to keep it in great condition.
Understanding the importance of moisturizing starts with understanding the importance of your skin barrier. The skin barrier is made up of cells and lipids. The skin barrier is meant to make sure water and electrolytes do not evaporate from the skin, or basically to retain the moisture. Other important functions of the barrier is to protect against harmful microorganisms and help with skin immunity. Think of your skin barrier as a shield against anything harmful to your skin. Moisturizing is the way to keep your skin barrier healthy and nourished so that it can do it’s very important job. Moisturize will help “trap” the moisture within that layer of skin so that your skin is healthy and happy.
A common misconception about moisturizing the skin is that if you don’t have dry skin you don’t need to moisturize. Many people think that moisturizing is just meant to treat dry skin. However, there are many different types of moisturizers to help with each skin type. A good way to think of it is the drier the skin, the more intense the moisturizer should typically be. Also, the thinner the moisturizer is, the more water it typically has in it. The reason water based moisturizers are great for oily skin is because they will evaporate more quickly. If you have drier skin you want to use moisturizers with oils because they can help prevent water from evaporating from the skin so quickly.
Another important thing to note is your skin loses more moisture while you’re sleeping than it does while you are awake. This is a big reason why moisturizers targeted for nighttime are often times more emollient and rich. Your skins barrier will do most of its repairing during your sleep cycle so that is why using a moisturizer at night is important. It will help your skin repair and regenerate properly.
Next time you are doing your skin care routine and think you can get away with skipping the moisturizer, just remember how important it is to your skin. You may think that your skin is fine without moisturizer from the outside (or top layer of skin), but just remember that the layers beneath are important as well. Just because you may not see a need for it doesn’t mean that the need is not there. Protecting your skin is very important and moisturizer is necessary in ensuring that your skin is in the best condition it can be in.
