Got Milk? Got Acne…

Count yourself lucky if you’ve never suffered from acne. A number of factors influence acne including genetics, hormones, skincare routine and diet. While we can’t control our genetics, acne can be managed and sometimes eliminated with the right skincare and diet.

I struggled with acne for almost a decade. I tried tons of topical treatments, but nothing seemed to keep those annoying pimples at bay. I started paying closer attention to my diet and I noticed my acne would get worse whenever I ate diary. I’d quit dairy for two or three weeks and my skin would start to improve. Then I‘d go back to eating dairy and my acne would flare up again.

It’s a hard addiction to break, but once I cut out dairy completely, my acne improved dramatically. A gentle and consistent skincare routine was all I needed to seal the deal. Of course, I still get the occasional breakout, but my acne is under much better control.

If you’re interested in alternatives to cow’s milk, there are tons of delicious options in the market. Hemp, rice, soy, almond, cashew, Brazil nut and coconut milks are available at health food stores and even regular supermarkets. When choosing your non-dairy milk, be mindful of added sugars, flavors and preservatives.

Feeling really ambitious? Try making your own coconut milk at home. Trust me, the flavor is sooo much better than anything you’ll find in a store!
