Switching to Green Products

Each day we are all exposed to many harmful chemicals, many of which could be coming right you’re your daily essentials. Switching to green products can seem like a daunting task and many people find themselves unsure of where to begin. The first thing you should ask yourself is why you want to switch. Many people are aware of the dangerous chemicals and toxins that are in many of your daily essentials. Have you ever turned your favorite shampoo or face cleanser around and tried to even pronounce half of the ingredients in it? Switching to green products is a smart move, especially if you are someone who just wants to live an overall healthier lifestyle. You can switch your diet and exercise routines, but if you are slathering on layers of toxins onto your body daily… are you really committing to a healthy lifestyle? Your body is your biggest organ and it should be just as important to you as what you put into it.

There are many benefits that come along with going green. You can give your system a bit of a detox by switching to products that are more natural. So many of the products on the shelves in stores today are full of filler products that are toxic. Over time you could rest easy knowing that you are avoiding so many ingredients that could be the cause of irritation and other health issues. If you are someone who has sensitivity, asthma, or even allergies you could benefit from switching to products that are not harmful to these conditions. There are many mainstream and Indie brands that are green and support local farmers and workers by sourcing ingredients from them. Many of these brands are also making big efforts by using recycled materials and not testing on animals.

When making the choice to switch to green products it is something that you can slowly change up. You don’t have to toss out everything that isn’t green on day one. I would recommend starting with things that are making a swift internal entrance into your body such as; toothpaste, mouthwash, and any lip products. Start with a core set of products that you can try out and you can add things as time goes by. Many people might find that it takes time to switch fully because a lot of it is trying to find products that work for you. It’s important to realize that your body and mind have probably become dependent on the chemicals that make some of your favorite products ‘work’ (such as deodorant). It’s a smart idea to do research into various brands/products and see what people are saying about them. There are many brands out there that have trial sizes of products that you can try before committing to a full size. You can look for products that are multipurpose as you are starting your transition to green such as a 2-in-1 shampoo and a moisturizer that you can use on your body and face. There are many brands out there that are green, the selection is not scarce like it was just a few short years ago.

As with anything else you will need to determine what ingredients your skin can tolerate. Just because something is green does not mean that there aren’t dangers of sensitivity or reactions to the product. Many natural products do contain essential oils, which some people can find irritating to the skin. Always be sure to patch test new products before trying them out. It’s important to remember that although natural ingredients might not be toxic the way a true man-made chemical is; natural ingredients can be potent. You can see impressive results while using green beauty products and not have to worry about how many toxins you are putting onto and into your body.

If you are considering making ‘the switch’ to green, just remember that it does not have to be a fast and immediate process. Take your time to really find what works best for your own skin, lifestyle, and budget. Many people say that they haven’t gone green because they think green beauty is pricier. While it’s true that some green beauty can be pricier, it’s usually because of the care and work put into the product and its sourcing. A few short years ago green beauty was pricier but now there are many products and brands that cater to all budgets today, making it possible for even more people to make the switch to a healthier lifestyle.
