Allergies are the body’s natural, negative response to a foreign substance through touch and/or ingestion (insect sting, nasal cavity, food, drink and/or medication). When having an allergic reaction, your immune system creates antibodies to fight off what your body recognizes as harmful. If you have allergies, you understand that the symptoms can range from mild to potentially life-threatening.
Most allergies cannot be cured. So, sufferers are strongly advised to practice avoidance of their triggers. Many people avoid, food, drink, insects, etc. but may not avoid body care products that include triggering ingredients. [A skin allergy is very real.]
This may happen because of uncertainty of product ingredients or a belief that [for example] a food allergy cannot translate into a skin (epidermal contact) allergy. [We hear a lot about food/drink, environmental and insect allergies but we don’t hear much about specific allergies to cosmetic ingredients in mainstream information/news sources.] For example, if you have an allergic reaction when you eat nuts, you may have an allergic reaction when using a body care product that contains nuts or their essence. Yikes!
To be safe and minimize negative skin (and health) reactions, it is important to be aware of what you’re putting on and in your body. Read the labels carefully and research the names of ingredients that you don’t readily recognize. Putting forth a little extra effort could save you from realizing a skin allergy and possibly your life.
