Questions regarding what products to use when washing your face when you are skin-sensitive are becoming the most common in our inbox. After reading this post, we hope to provide you with more information to help start you on the path to finding the best products for your skin and begin a solid regimen for your best possible skin.
When your skin is easily reactive, it may be tempting to forgo a daily face-care routine. Although it seems to trigger less break outs and reduces the feeling or irritation, failure to wash your face regularly allows bacteria (and infection) to grow. This growth actually increases the severity, duration and frequency of your breakouts. In other words, not having a regular face care routine is making your skin worse!
A good face care routine consists of the following basic products, applied in this order:
Wash – Minimum twice a day, waking up and before bed
Some advise the use of your fingertips to properly wash your face. If you have oily skin or use heavy products, such as make up, a face towel may be best – a clean towel with each wash.
Exfoliate – Every 2-3 days after each wash
If wash is also an exfoliator, an independent exfoliator is not needed.
Toner – After each wash (optional product, depends upon skin type)
May be used as an additional cleanser and aid to help restore skin’s pH balance
Moisturize – Minimum after each wash, may be more frequent use in cooler, dryer weather
Apply once toner has dried. Skin type determines the type of moisturizer to use. Oily skin requires a lighter moisturizer while dry skin requires something heavier.
Sun Block – Daily, per product instructions
People with sensitive skin often times have a negative reaction to sun block and don’t use it. Skipping sun block can worsen existing hyper pigmentation marks and allow for sun damage with prolonged sun exposure.
All products are not the same. And what may work for a friend or family member may no work for you. Try different products to find what’s right for you. When trying a product for the first time, read each product label to avoid products that contain ingredients that irritate you. If you’re not sure, try each product in a discreet place on your body and check for a negative reaction.
